Simple Machines Document, Adverbs, Typing Club & Kidblog

Please complete the following in this order:

1. Finish your Simple Machines document if you haven't already done so.

2. Practice adverbs by playing all 4 games listed below.
Adverbs often end in -ly.  Remember that an adverb describes a verb or an adjective and answers one of these questions: How?  How often?  When?  Where?

Finish Simple Machines Document

During class today, keep 2 tabs open so that it's easy for you to go back and forth:
1 - The 4th Grade Technology Blog (so you have easy access to the simple machine websites I provided)
2 - Google Drive (which has your Simple Machines Template)

Simple Machines

When you open your Google Drive account today, you will see that I have shared a document with you called Simple Machines template.  You will need to click on "Shared With Me" which is located on the left side of your screen and should be right below "My Drive".

Mr. Rook would like you to complete this chart in preparation for the Science Fair.  We will focus on 3 different simple machines today: Wheel & Axle, Gears and Inclined Plane.  We will divide this list among the class so that we don't have all 15 students working on wheels, for example.

Here are some internet resources you may use for this project:

Edheads - Glossary of terms

Simple Machines - if you scroll down, you will see a list of simple machines, their definitions and examples.

Scholastic - Simple Machines

Edheads - Simple Machines Game - if you play this game you will learn about different examples of simple machines.

Use these websites when we work on Part 2 of this project:
Enchanted Learning - Levers
The Franklin Institute (a screw)

More on Kidblog Commenting & Wordly Wise Practice

A few comments about commenting (on Kidblog)
I was very happy to see that a lot of you are reading each other's posts and providing comments and showing interest in blogging!  Either Mr. Rook, Mrs. Seaton or I must approve your Comments before they go up on Kidblog.  I read through your comments yesterday and I decided not to approve comments that had the following:
  • Less than 3 words
  • More than 3 exclamation points
  • Just saying "Hi"
The following are some suggestions for improving your Comments

1. Please add more detail. I would appreciate it a lot. Make sure you also include one positive statement in your comment, such as "I enjoyed your post but I wanted to know more about what happened."
2. I’d want to live there!  Include WHY you want to live there.  What was it about the dream that was so appealing?  Give specific details, ask questions.
3. i want to be tucker  Tell your classmate WHY you want to be Tucker.

Things to INCLUDE  in a Comment
  • This made me think about when ..... (I can relate to this because....)
  • This made me wonder why...
  • I was confused by....
  • Another thing to consider is....
  • I agree with you BECAUSE, or, I really liked your post BECAUSE....

If you have not finished your Small Steps book report, please open Google Drive and finish editing it.  If you are finished with the book report, open Quizlet in order to practice the vocabulary in Lesson 7 of Wordly Wise.  Click on the link below.

Edit Small Steps Book Reports

While I am out today, you will login to Google Drive and open your Small Steps book report.  Your L.A. teacher has provided hand written comments on your last printed draft and the substitute teacher will hand your draft back to you today.

If you haven't received comments from your teacher yet, that means you probably need to continue typing your book report.  When you finish typing, please send it to the printer and give it to the substitute.  MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SELECTED THE RIGHT PRINTER BEFORE CLICKING PRINT!

For those that have done all they can on their book reports, please work on the following:
1. Respond to the prompt on Kidblog regarding The Cricket in Times Square.
Link for Kidblog: 4th Grade Kidblog  (password = __________)

2. If you started a Kidblog post last week, open your Saved Draft and continue writing. Follow these directions: Login to Kidblog; Click "Control Panel" in the top right corner; Click on "Drafts"; Click "Edit" under the Draft you want to continue writing.

3. If you have finished working on Kidblog, login to HTS Typing Club (username is last name followed by first initial and password is:  htstype)

For those that don't remember how to open Google Drive, scroll down on the 4th Grade Technology Blog and re-read the directions posted on January 14, 2014.
